What this calculator covers

Pick your Shopify plan and how the sale came in: online through Shopify Payments, in person via Shopify POS, or a non-Shopify gateway like PayPal, which adds its own surcharge. Why the rate changes by plan

Shopify's card rate drops as you move up plan tiers: Basic charges 2.9% + 30¢ online, Grow drops to 2.7%, Advanced falls to 2.5%, with in-person lower still. A higher monthly subscription buys a lower per-sale rate, so the cheapest plan overall depends on how many sales you run each month.

Worked example

Sell a $60 hoodie online on Shopify Basic and the card fee is 2.9% ($1.74) plus 30¢, so $2.04 total, netting you $57.96. Sell it in person through Shopify POS instead and the rate drops to 2.6% + 10¢, netting $58.34. Route it through PayPal instead and Shopify still adds its own 2% surcharge on top.

Shopify recently relaunched its plans for Spring '26: the old "Shopify" tier was renamed "Grow" with a rate cut, and a new $0/month "Agentic" plan appeared. How much does Shopify take per sale?

Online cards: 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic), 2.7% + 30¢ (Grow), 2.5% + 30¢ (Advanced), with in-person a bit lower. Amex/premium cards add ~0.6 pts.

Does Shopify charge a fee if I use PayPal or another gateway?

Yes. Any gateway other than Shopify Payments adds a surcharge on top of its own fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced.

What's the difference between Shopify's plans and Shopify Plus?

Basic, Grow, and Advanced are self-serve plans with published rates. Plus (from ~$2,300/mo) is individually-negotiated enterprise pricing, not included here.

Is the international rate different?

Yes, online sales add a flat 1-point surcharge for international cards, the same on every plan. Toggle "International / cross-border card" to apply it.

Which Shopify plan is actually cheapest for my store?

Run your typical sale through Basic, Grow, and Advanced and compare. If the per-sale savings times your monthly volume beats the subscription gap, upgrade.
