What this calculator covers
Pick how the payment came in: an online card, a manually keyed card, an in-person Terminal swipe, an ACH debit, or a Stripe invoice. Type in the amount and the calculator shows the fee and your net payout instantly. Need to work backward? Switch to "I want to receive this" and it solves for the price to charge.
Why card and bank fees differ so much
Card payments carry network costs and fraud risk, priced at 2.9% + 30¢, plus 0.5 points more if you type the card number in by hand. ACH bank debits skip the card networks, so the rate drops to 0.8%, capped at $5. Invoicing is cheapest of all at 0.4%, capped at $2, since it's billing for Stripe's own tool.
Worked example
Say you charge $200 for an online card sale. Stripe takes 2.9% ($5.80) plus 30¢, so $6.10 total, leaving you $193.90, an effective rate of about 3.05%. Charge that same $200 by ACH bank debit instead and the fee is just 0.8% ($1.60), well under the $5 cap, so you keep $198.40, $4.50 more for an identical sale.
A note on the caps and where this can be wrong
Because ACH and invoicing fees are capped at $5 and $2, the effective rate shrinks as the amount grows: a $50,000 ACH payment still only costs $5. This calculator uses Stripe's standard rates, not custom Interchange-plus pricing, volume discounts, or currency conversion, so check with Stripe on a negotiated contract.
Frequently asked questions
What are Stripe's standard fees?
2.9% + 30¢ online card, +0.5 pts if manually keyed, 2.7% + 5¢ in-person, 0.8% (capped $5) ACH, 0.4% (capped $2) invoices. International cards add 1.5 pts.
Why is Stripe's ACH fee capped but the card fee isn't?
ACH is capped at $5 and invoicing at $2, so the effective rate falls as the amount rises. Card fees have no cap, so they scale linearly with the sale.
How do I calculate what to charge to net a specific amount on Stripe?
Switch to "I want to receive this" mode, enter your target net amount and transaction type, and it solves for the exact charge to net that amount.
Does Stripe charge extra for international cards?
Yes, a flat 1.5 points on top of the domestic rate for cards issued outside the US, plus 1% for currency conversion if applicable.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal or Square?
Depends on volume and type. Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ beats PayPal Checkout (3.49% + 49¢) and is competitive with Square. Compare with each calculator.
