Why the rate drops as you move up a plan

Square's Free plan has no monthly cost but the highest per-sale rate. Plus ($49/month) and Premium ($149/month) trade a subscription for a lower rate: in-person tap/dip/swipe falls from 2.6% on Free to 2.5% on Plus to 2.4% on Premium. That small gap adds up fast at real volume.

Worked example

Tap a customer's card for $35 on Square Free and the fee is 2.6% ($0.91) plus 15¢, so $1.06 total, netting you $33.94, an effective rate of about 3.03%. Take that same $35 online instead and the rate jumps to 3.3% + 30¢ ($1.46), netting $33.54, since card-not-present sales carry more fraud risk.
